Cooking Up Memories in Italy: My Unforgettable Experience at Nene Kitchen in Bellagio

Italy has always held a special place in my heart, but one of my absolute favorite experiences was taking a cooking class at Nene Kitchen in Bellagio with the incredible Chef Antonella Coppola. Full disclosure—this was pre-kids, and I had the joy of sharing it with my Aunt Emmy, Mom, and Best Friend. But now, as a mom, I can’t help but think how amazing this would be to do as a family with young kids!

More Than Just a Cooking Class

There’s something special about learning a new skill together, especially when it involves delicious Italian cuisine. This wasn’t just a class—it was an immersion into Italian culture, tradition, and flavors. Chef Antonella guided us through the process with passion, making every step feel approachable and fun. From making fresh pasta to perfecting a rich, flavorful sauce, every moment was hands-on and filled with laughter.

A Souvenir That Keeps on Giving

Unlike souvenirs that collect dust, the recipes we learned in this class have become gifts that keep on giving. Even years later, I find myself whipping up dishes from that day, instantly transporting me back to Lake Como. Cooking these recipes at home is like reliving the experience over and over—something I’d love to share with my kids one day!

Why a Cooking Class is Perfect for Families

Now that I have my own family, I see travel through a new lens. This experience would be incredible for kids—not just watching but truly participating. Learning something new together is so much more meaningful than simply showing them how to do it. It’s an interactive way to connect not just with each other but also with the culture of your destination. Plus, who wouldn’t want to bring a little bit of Italy home with them?

Our Stay at Nene Bellagio

Another highlight of our trip? Nene Bellagio in San Giovanni—the perfect home base for exploring Lake Como. The accommodations were perfect, and the family that runs the business was so welcoming and helpful. My parents and aunt stayed in the Terrazza Apartment, which had a lovely terrace overlooking the courtyard. Some friends stayed in the B&B portion, while the rest of us stayed in the Villino Apartment. From the moment we arrived, Alissa and Clizia were incredibly helpful—especially when I found out my parents hadn’t arrived yet, and I panicked thinking they may have gotten lost on the drive from Switzerland! Their kindness and assistance made all the difference, and we immediately felt at home. BTW my parents were not lost and arrived about an hour later!

Why Lake Como is My Favorite Place on Earth

There’s a reason Lake Como is my happy place, where I truly feel at home. The breathtaking scenery, the charm of the small villages, the warmth of the locals, the glistening of the lake—it’s pure magic. Whether you’re exploring by boat, driving the crazy winding roads, wandering through cobblestone streets, or (of course) taking a cooking class, every moment here is unforgettable.

If you’re dreaming of an Italian adventure, I highly recommend adding a cooking class to your itinerary! And of course, I’d love to help plan your perfect getaway—let’s make it happen!
